We held the 5th Annual Highway 10 Baseball Classic, June 24 – 26, 2016, with two VFW brackets for youth age 16 – 17 and one Babe Ruth bracket for youth age 13 – 15.
The Suicide Prevention banquet was held Saturday, June 25 at the New York Mills School.
Funds raised through the baseball tournament went back to the participating teams in the form of $1,000 grants from the Christopher Benz Foundation to support suicide awareness and prevention efforts at their schools.
The idea of a baseball tournament with a focus on the prevention of teenage suicide began in 2007. Chris Benz was a high school senior who had a bright future ahead of him when he died by suicide in January 2007. His family and friends came together with the community and began the Chris Benz Memorial Baseball Tournament with a focus on increasing awareness and providing education and resources to prevent suicide.
The Highway 10 Baseball Classic joined forces with the Christopher Benz Foundation to broaden the reach of suicide prevention efforts. The Christopher Benz Foundation and the Highway 10 Baseball Classic have collectively awarded over $32,000 in suicide prevention grants to 25 schools and communities throughout Minnesota and North Dakota since that first suicide prevention baseball tournament in 2007.
