On January 11, 2007, Christopher Benz died by suicide when he was only 17 years old. His family and friends do not want Christopher’s death to define his life, but want his life to become a lasting legacy of serving others. It is our hope that Chris’ story will reach out to kids who may find themselves feeling overwhelmed, out of control or in despair and help them know that there is help.
The Christopher Benz Foundation connects communities in fostering healthy teenagers and young adults, and provides education and resources in our schools to raise awareness about the prevention of teenage suicide.
Minnesota and Youth Suicide
Did you know that suicide is a bigger problem for Minnesota than it is for the rest of the country as a whole?
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in Minnesota for young people age 15 to 35, second only to automobile accidents (Minnesota Department of Health, 2012). Nationwide suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for people age 15 to 35 (Centers for Disease Control, 2012).
